CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY WITH
THE GIFT OF LOVE!
CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY WITH
THE GIFT OF LOVE!

Lula Washington Dance Theatre comes to Dance Place in DC 2 Performances Only!
Lula Washington Dance Theatre comes to Dance Place in DC 2 Performances Only!
Dear Friends:
On Valentine’s weekend, February 14-15, (Sat-Sun/8pm & 4pm) the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, from Los Angeles, California, will bring an exciting 35th anniversary program to Washington, D. C. for its first-ever performance at Dance Place at 3225 8 Street, NE, 20017.
Because Lula and the Company have a passionate commitment to education both at home and in every community in which they perform, I am counting on you to help fill those 144 seats with aspiring young artists, dance enthusiasts, professionals and individuals like yourselves who love to support the arts, including those couples who would enjoy sharing this Valentine’s Day romantic cultural celebration together!
“Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the gift of love!” Donate Tickets for Students! You can purchase tickets with your donation which we will distribute to youth and young adults in middle, high school and college who simply cannot afford to go. *Mention my name when calling box office (202-269-1600) for $20 special promotional rate.
*All donors of group donations of 10 or more will be given complimentary tickets to the show along with a special invitation to the VIP Reception on Sunday, Feb. 15, with DC’s newly elected Mayor, Muriel Bowser (invited) and other elected officials and representatives.
The Performers: Founded in 1980 in inner city Los Angeles, this vibrant troupe is known for powerful, high-energy dancing and unique choreography by its founder, Lula Washington, who blends contemporary dance with African, ballet, street dance, and Katherine Dunham technique.
The Company is composed of young, athletic dancers, many of whom were groomed in Lula Washington’s inner city dance studio. While Lula Washington encourages her dancers to be excellent performers, she also emphasizes the importance of being leaders in their communities.
The Company will perform Lula Washington's "Random Thoughts," called "brilliant" for its exploration of the jazz compositions of trumpet player Terrence Blanchard. "Love Is..." by Christopher Huggins (formerly of Alvin Ailey). This work explores differing perspectives on love and romance -- an ideal treat for Valentine's Day. "Reign", by Rennie Harris, fuses hip hop and House dance to invigorate audiences and make them want to move. The program will also include excerpts from Washington's "The Little Rock Nine," which looks at the Civil Rights movement. This multi-faceted company also performs works by such acclaimed contemporary innovators such as Donald McKayle, Donald Byrd, and talented emerging choreographers such as Tamica Washington-Miller, Associate Director of LWDT.
Background Info: Lula worked closely with film director James Cameron to create movement and rituals for the mega hit film, Avatar. A love-story in itself, Lula’s husband, Erwin Washington, walked away from a successful journalism and TV career to help his wife run the company as co-founder and Executive Director. In addition to celebrating the 35 anniversary of the company, they are celebrating their 45 wedding anniversary!
Lula Washington Dance Theatre has danced in major theaters across America and in Russia, China, Brazil, Germany, Mexico and Spain. It was last seen in Washington, DC at the John K. Kennedy Center's Masterpieces of African-American Dance festival.
Please help me reach our GOAL: To raise donations and purchase enough tickets to fill all 144 seats in Dance Place to show them our support for bringing excellence in African-American dance and culture to their theatre.
To Donate Funds for Tickets: Please call the box office at: 202-269-1600 send checks made payable to: "Dance Place" and send to 3225 8 Street, NE, 20017. We would like to fill up the house and provide complimentary tickets to young aspiring dance students and professionals as well as, minority students, family and friends.
I thank you in advance for spreading the word and sharing this exciting invitation to join Lula and the Company this Valentine’s Day for an extraordinary and ROMANTIC experience.
Hope to see you at the show!

MLK 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF "I HAVE A DREAM" SPEECH
GOSPEL BRUNCH - WILLARD HOTEL - WASHINGTON, DC
SUNDAY, AUGUST 25, 2013 - 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

The Voices of Worship (VOW) received an exciting invitation from the Willard Hotel to present a musical tribute to Dr. King in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, DC. The historic speech was written by Dr. King at the Willard Hotel.
In keeping with the focus of Dr. King's message and heart which was for the coming together of all God’s children, black, brown, red, yellow and white, the choir will be a reflection of his dream both in spirit and in truth. In preparation for this musical event, the invitation to participate has been extended to other vocalists and ensembles including those who participated in “Lazarus, the Musical” from DC, MD and Northern VA.
In Christ and Love,
Rev. Felicia Kessel Crawley
